CUCALORUS KIDS! FESTIVAL
INTRODUCING CHILDREN TO FILMMAKING
Has your child ever dreamt of making movies? Could your kid be the next Walt Disney or Stephen Spielberg? While most children must wait until high school or college to explore the world of movie-making, your child can get a head start on March 23 and 24 during the 2nd Cucalorus Kids! Film Festival. Children of all ages can experience the thrill of filmmaking during this unique 2-day event.
During Cucalorus Kids! aspiring young filmmakers and movie buffs are immersed in film-related activities. Both days promise a kid-friendly orientation to the wonderful world of filmmaking with screenings of age-appropriate shorts, cartoons, and feature-length children’s films. Engaging workshops, movie-themed activities, and interacting with independent filmmakers will round out the festival’s offerings.
FRIDAY
8AM TO 9:30AM: Friday’s fun begins with “Toddler Time” (for kids under age 5) at Jengo’s Playhouse, sponsored by the Children’s Museum of Wilmington. Toddler Time engages preschoolers in play activities (music, dance, crafts, etc.) designed to introduce the medium of film.
10AM TO 6PM: Beginning at 10:00am and throughout the afternoon, pre-registered students attending nearby schools and urban after-school programs will learn many facets of the craft from local indie filmmakers.
7PM TO 9PM: Friday night’s activities at Jengo’s Playhouse begin at 7:00 pm with martial arts demonstrations and a screening of the Wilmington-made family classic “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
SATURDAY
8AM TO 10AM: A Saturday Morning Superhero Breakfast jumpstarts the day when kids arrive at Jengo’s Playhouse dressed as superheroes! Kids can also meet some of their favorite superheroes and a real-life superhero cartoon artist. Screenings of age-appropriate cartoons and storytelling by Scott Davis to follow.
10AM TO 3PM: The Cucalorus Kids! Day Camp departs from Jengo’s Playhouse for Screen Gems Studios (camp limited to 30; pre-registration required). This 5-hour workshop for ages 9 to 14 offers equipment and animation demonstrations, and the chance to make a Cucalorus commercial. Workshop topics will touch on the many artistic talents that come together in filmmaking. Other activities include a guided tour of Screen Gems Studio, the largest movie production facility east of California, where kids learn about local productions and get a peek at sets from The CW television series “One Tree Hill.”
6PM TO 8PM: Saturday’s main event features a variety of kids’ short films—made by kids and submitted especially for this festival! (6:30pm).
