The Spook Who Sat By the Door
directed by Ivan Dixon, 1973

presented by the YWCA and Cucalorus
Friday, June 22 at 7:30pm
Jengo's Playhouse
815 Princess Street

He turned the American dream... into a nightmare!

In order to improve his standing with Black voters, a White Senator starts a campaign for the CIA to recruit Black agents. However, all are graded on a curve and doomed to fail, save for a soft-spoken veteran named Dan Freeman. After grueling training in guerrilla warfare, clandestine operations and unarmed combat, he is assigned a meager job as the CIA's token Black employee. After five years of racist and stereotyped treatment by his superiors, he quietly resigns to return to his native Chicago to work for a social services agency...by day. By night, he trains a street gang to be the vanguard in an upcoming race war, using all that the CIA has taught him.

Yo Tek: A Uganda Tennis Story
directed by Rex Miller

Cucalorus Film Foundation
Friday, June 15 at 7:30pm
Jengo's Playhouse
815 Princess Street

Cucalorus hosts this work-in-progress screening with Rex Miller, filmmaker and photographer. Rex will join us at Jengo's to answer questions and share stories about his experiences making the film. The screening is free, but donations are encouraged.

"Yo Tek: A Uganda Tennis Story" follows Patrick Olobo, Uganda's top-ranked tennis player, as he struggles to leave behind a devastating civil war and break into the ranks of professional tennis. Patrick was four when rebels destroyed his family's farm and murdered his brother. The effects of years spend in an Internally Displaced Persons Camp and a stubborn desire to help his displaced family have driven Patrick throughout his subsequent and improbable rise to Davis Cup competition and the United States.

Accompanying Patrick during his last weeks in Uganda and his first year in the United States, Rex Miller documents the thrills of elite competition and the challenges of a new life dependent upon "country club" sponsors. Haunted by his life in Uganda and committed to helping his family escape the effects of war, Patrick struggles to adapt to American culture and navigate the complexities of relying on the financial support of others.

YWCA Race Relations Film Series presents:
Rosewood by John Singleton

Friday, May 25 at 7:30pm
Jengo's Playhouse
815 Princess Street
FREE

YWCA, Cucalorus and Jengo's Playhouse host this monthly film series focusing on race relations through the lens of the filmmaker. Each screening in the series is followed by a discussion period with members of the community. Rosewood chronicles a black town in Florida that was burned to the ground in 1923, its people murdered because of a lie. Some escaped and survived because of the courage and compassion of a few extraordinary people. This film is for them.

"I am concerned about absolute historical accuracy to an extent, but I am really more worried about being truthful to the essence of what happened at Rosewood... I am making a movie that people will respond to."
