The Children's House

Thursday, July 26 at 7:30pm
Jengo's Playhouse

Synopsis:
Summer 2005. The Tel Aviv museum is holding an exhibition called “Communal Sleeping” in which kibbutz-born artists living in town portray through their works their childhood experiences of communal sleeping.

The Children's House follows the process of creation of several artists for several months up until the actual setting up of the exhibition. This is a film about childhood experiences, sensations, pains and memories surrounding the unique experience of communal sleeping. The film comprises archival material from documentaries produced in the 50's by the kibbutz movement. These “On behalf of” documentary scenes stand in stark contrast to the present authentic pain of the film's main characters.

Cinematography by Albert Maysles
United States, 2005, Color, 85 minutes - Digibeta

In 1990, in the early morning hours after St. Patrick’s Day, thieves disguised as Boston police officers gained access to Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner museum and successfully perpetrated the largest art heist in modern history. Among the thirteen priceless paintings stolen were works by Rembrandt, Degas and Manet. But none is more sorely missed than The Concert by Johannes Vermeer, one of only 35 surviving works by the beloved Dutch master. For those who loved these paintings, particularly the rare Vermeer, the theft felt almost personal.

To date, not a single painting stolen that day has been recovered.

A Dry White Season

Friday, July 20 at 7:30pm
Jengo's Playhouse

Schoolteacher Ben du Toit (Donald Sutherland) has been insulated all his life from the horrors of apartheid in his native South Africa. Perhaps he really didn't want to know. When the son of his black gardener is arrested and beaten as a result of a schoolboy protest in Soweto, at first he imagines the police must have had their reasons. However, the boy is picked up again, and this time he doesn't come back. Ben promises his servant that he will look into the incident, and discovers that the boy was killed simply to gratify the violent urges of Captain Stolz (Jurgen Prochnow), a "special branch" policeman. At long last he has gotten a glimpse into the truly arbitrary and violent nature of the system he has so long benefitted from, and he hires Ian Mackenzie (Marlon Brando) to prosecute the killer. It is a foregone conclusion that Stolz will not be punished, but Mackenzie rises to new heights of withering sarcasm and irony in the courtroom. This situation turns Ben into a radical firebrand, which alienates him from his white friends and neighbors, as well as members of his family. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Race to the Finish
July 10 from 4-8pm

Final Deadline for Cucalorus 13 Entries
Cucalorus announces a special film submission celebration, to be held on deadline day, with music, food and waived entry fees to local filmmakers who “race to the finish” with their work. Filmmakers may go to www.cucalorus.org to download an entry form which must accompany all submissions. Entries should be on DVD or VHS; any genre is welcomed. The “Race to the Finish” entry celebration will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Jengo’s Playhouse, home to the Festival’s offices, at 815 Princess Street. Cucalorus 13 will be held November 7 – 10, 2007.

Adding to the “Race to the Finish,” celebration, will be Wilmington musician Stephen Sellers performing music from his newly released CD, “Hello Love.” Free CDs will be offered to all filmmakers entering their film that day. Food and drinks will be served, and inside Jengo’s, people will be treated to a free screening of North Carolina films, selections from previous Cucalorus Film Fests.

As a special incentive during “Race to the Finish,” film submission entry fees of $40 will be waived to those who join the Cucalorus Film Foundation for $40. Foundation membership also provides discounts on festival passes, access to the full film and video library of previous festival films, newsletters and periodic e-mail announcements and invitations.

In 2006, out of the total films screened, some 25 percent were made by North Carolina filmmakers. “There is a lot of talent here and some great stories being told on film,” said Dan Brawley, festival director. “We want to see and screen that work, showing audiences how local filmmakers are using film to tell their stories.”

Brawley also comments that the festival isn’t limited to professional filmmakers only. Aspiring, new talent is equally welcomed. “While some of our submissions may be a bit raw, the stories they tell or the perspectives they share are entirely creative and exciting. We take pride in creating opportunities for artists to share their work.” The Cucalorus Film Festival is an ideal venue to discover new works as the festival explores the art of filmmaking in a friendly, non-competitive environment. Films are not judged, merely screened and shared. And filmmakers at all stages of their careers meet, mix and share experiences and opinions.
