Start A New Conversation About Race

(Wilmington, NC, January 2009) - The YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear invites you to gather with members of our community to begin conversations about race and racism at 3:30 pm on January 17, 2009 at Jengo’s Playhouse (815 Princess Street). To facilitate these conversations, the YWCA created a conversation-starting program on DVD, titled Skyn Deep. This DVD depicts characters engaged in various racial encounters. Throughout the program, the group will be guided into discussions that can lead to new insights, perspectives and communication skills for addressing issues of race. These conversations can lead to better interracial relationships and also serve as a meaningful commemoration of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. It is also an important way to serve your community in response to President-elect Obama’s call for "Renewing America Together.”

Although donations will be accepted for YWCA child care scholarships to assist families in need, the event is free and open to the community. The YWCA encourages everyone to bring a friend! Please call the YWCA at (910) 799-6820 for more information.
