Redheads are hot. Television series such as Riverdale and CBC’s Anne are filling our screens with images of ginger glory. But gay Toronto comic Shawn Hitchins has made flame-haired world domination his mission for years.
Ginger Nation documents Hitchins’ humorous and heartfelt one-man show (of the same name) as the affable entertainer recounts his experience as a sperm donor to his lesbian friends. Hitchins’ spunky storytelling effortlessly weaves tales from his adolescence and his brushes with celebrity as a stand-up comic with bizarre tales of turkey basters and masturbating in increasingly suspect bathrooms.
Best known for sparking the global wave of Ginger Pride by marching hundreds of redheads through the streets of Edinburgh, Shawn Hitchins is an award-winning entertainer who has toured throughout Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. He has presented with LOL Comedy Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Harbourfront Centre, Luminato Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and been featured on Buzzfeed, CNN, BBC, The Guardian, Time Out New York (Critic’s Pick). In 2017, The fiery redhead published his debut memoir ‘A Brief History Of Oversharing.’ Hitchins was raised in a hayfield, educated in a swamp, and still has all his own teeth.
