When New York City native Michael Halsband was 25, he found himself on the road with The Rolling Stones, shooting their 1981 "Tattoo You" tour and living the rock and roll lifestyle. After years as a prominent commercial photographer and two tours with AC/DC, Halsband met World Longboarding Champion Joel Tudor and proceeded to begin a working relationship, documenting Tudor in stills and on film. The first result of this collaboration is "Surf Movie: Reels 1-14," a collection of Super-8 reels placed end to end with no editing, other than placing them in chronological order. After adding some remarkable original music by composer Richard Fortus, the end result of Halsband's labor is a beautifully original surf film, one that isn't filled with perfect waves and spitting tubes, but graced with flaws and missed waves. Of course, having subjects like Tudor, old school legend Wayne Lynch, World Champion Longboarder Beau Young and Six-Time shortboarding champ Kelly Slater doesn't hurt. -Zach Hanner
