Longtime Wilmington residents have heard some of the rumors that float around about the secluded Crusoe Island community. Located in the Green Swamp in Brunswick County, these people are known for suspicion of outsiders and subsistence living along the Waccamaw River.
Because of the centuries-old isolation, residents have a unique lifestyle and (nearly intelligible) dialect, similar to what you would find in the ‘hollers’ of mountains. This documentary from Lisa Bertini takes a look the life of one family in this interesting community.
