Surfalorus wrapped a weekend of great waves and rad movies with an awards party at the Outer Banks Brewing Station on Saturday night in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Special guest CJ Hobgood (World Surf League World Champion 2001) snapped up the Best Feature award for “And Two If By Sea” directed by Justin Purser. Visiting surfer, photographer, dad, and pretty good bloke Matt Smith took home Best Short for the doc about his Polaroid photography titled “Instant Surf” directed by Adam Bell. Smith traveled from Cornwall, England and spent the week driving up and down the coast to find the best breaks of the day.
Friday night’s screening at the Dare County Arts Council included a stellar line-up of OBX filmmakers including Chris Hannant, Anthony Leone, and James Clower – joined by New Jersey surfer and filmmaker Sean Santiago. Clower took home the Best Cinematography award for his crafty work on the short film Relatable Form – a global look at shapers and the relationship between nature and the things we ride.
Newport Beach surfer and filmmaker Jordyn Romero took the festival’s top honor – the Emerging Filmmaker Award. Romero’s film was the highlight of the Thursday night outdoor screening at Dowdy Park. The film tells the personal story of surfer, mom, and bikini activist Katherine Terrell from Nosara, Costa Rica. The 2018 Emerging Filmmaker Award recipient Logan Marshall, whose latest film “Dimensions” closed the festival Saturday night, was on hand to announce the Emerging Filmmaker Award.
Attendance broke records at this year’s screenings. Over 700 people attended the three day event.
