Blooming Frames is an experimental film that focuses on the relationship between hand manipulation and celluloid. The project explores how texture, materiality, and color can enhance and transform celluloid film. Using techniques including scratching, India ink, magazine transfers, and bleach, the film emphasizes experimentation and unpredictability. The methods involved direct manipulation of both found footage and clear film leader, often combining techniques to examine how they interact with and transform one another. The film was digitized using a Blackmagic Cintel scanner, allowing for both negative and positive versions of the film featuring different visual qualities.
Structured around six locations, the film reflects on growing up as a military child and experiencing constant change. Blooming Frames demonstrates how analog processes can produce impactful and unique visual effects by highlighting the contrast between handmade film and digital music production. Through experimentation and material engagement, Blooming Frames displays the importance of film’s materiality and personalization while emphasizing artistic discovery.
