Wilmington, NC- The Pope of Trash is returning to the Port City after 18 years! Cucalorus is excited to announce A Night of Chaos, Bad Taste, Big Hair & Cult Cinema, a double feature of the documentary Scala!!! and the cult classic Female Trouble, in celebration of the upcoming John Waters one-man show at UNCW. Known for his provocative and satirical approach, Waters has written and directed sixteen films, including cult classics like Pink Flamingos and Hairspray. His work unapologetically tackles themes of race, sex, gender, consumerism, and religion, infused with his unique blend of wit and cynicism. A Night of Chaos takes place Friday, March 21 at Jengo’s Playhouse, 815 Princess Street, in the heart of the Soda Pop District.
The first screening will begin at 6:15pm with a trip down memory lane into the strange world of the UK's riotous and raunchy cinema in Scala!!!, the famous theater that influenced a generation of weirdos and misfits. Featuring a cornucopia of interviews, archive and film clips, it’s an engrossing tribute to an indelible legacy. Director Jane Giles mentioned, “The Scala was one of the first cinemas that was showing John Waters’ films. [We had] a cult movie scene that was driven by its punk and art school audience, and John really fit in that whole slot– he was like a friend of the Scala!”
The grotesque and campy Female Trouble kicks off at 9pm as Dawn Davenport (portrayed by famous drag queen, Divine) progresses from a teenage nightmare hell-bent on getting cha-cha heels for Christmas to a fame monster whose egomaniacal impulses land her in the electric chair. It’s a defiantly crude, melodramatic raunchy comedy that helped gain John Waters the title of Duke of Dirt!
Convulsions curator Aaron Hillis recently spoke with Waters on the new Cucalorus Conversations podcast, recalling his career highlights and his latest show, The Naked Truth. You can check out their full interview on the Cucalorus channel on Spotify.
A VIP ticket will gain you access to both screenings, a sexy cocktail, and a dirty-vegan-filthy-hot dog for $25. Individual tickets are also available for $15. Tickets are on sale now at jengos.eventive.org/schedule.
