Wilmington, NC – The genre-bending horror film that stunned late-night audiences at last year’s Cucalorus Film Festival is back for a one-night-only screening on Friday, July 11 at 7:30pm at Jengo’s Playhouse. Tickets are $10 and available now at jengos.eventive.org.What if true terror could be conjured into existence? Blending fiction and indisputable fact from nearly 20 years of archival video, It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This documents a married couple who has bought an abandoned duplex to film a low-budget horror flick. After random strangers begin appearing outside, staring at the old building in an unsettling trance, the two are delighted to find themselves in a real-life scary story. An instant favorite from TIFF, Sitges, and the “Convulsions” sidebar at Cucalorus 30, this darkly funny chiller literally must be experienced on the big screen. The filmmakers have sworn it will never be released online, making this a rare event for fans of bold, risk-taking cinema.Following the Convulsions premiere, filmmakers Rachel Kempf and Nick Toti held a real auction for the film’s shooting location: a haunted duplex in Missouri. Two audience members, Zoë Ligon (a nationally known sex educator) and Lyndsay Rae, placed the winning bid of just $1,000. Since then, the new owners have floated plans to turn the house into a recycled sex-toy art project—or perhaps a new horror film location.Curated by Aaron Hillis (aka Saint Pervious), Convulsions is Cucalorus’ notorious adults-only sidebar celebrating cinema that’s too weird, too wild, or too NSFW for daylight. The festival program was recently named one of the 40 Best Genre Film Festivals on Earth by Dread Central, alongside an elite list of international fests and showcases.Hillis recently sat down with Kempf, Toti, Ligon, and Rae to unpack the madness of the film and the strange legacy it’s already leaving behind. You can listen to the full story in the latest episode of Cucalorus Conversations, available now on YouTube and Spotify. To buy tickets for It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This, and to explore the full list lineup of summer films at Jengo’s Playhouse, visit: jengos.eventive.org/schedule.
