Jengo's hosts Juneteenth screening of The Secret Life of Bees

Wilmington, NC- Cucalorus continues its Summer Film Series with a special Juneteenth screening of The Secret Life of Bees on Friday, June 20 at Jengo’s Playhouse. The evening begins with a pre-screening social hour at 6:30 p.m., followed by the film at 7:30 p.m. In celebration of Juneteenth—a day honoring freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward equality and justice for Black Americans—this screening is proudly sponsored by the National Black Leadership Caucus and the Wilmington News Journal. Guests are invited to arrive early for a special social hour, featuring Susan Warwick of the New Hanover County Beekeepers Association and Pine Grove Bee Works. Warwick will be on hand with an observation hive and locally harvested honey available for sale.The Secret Life of Bees, filmed in Wilmington in 2008, is set in South Carolina in 1964. The film follows 14-year-old Lily Owens as she flees her troubled home life in search of answers about her late mother’s past. Accompanied by her caregiver Rosaleen, Lily finds refuge in a town that holds the key to her family’s history—and the healing power of community. The film is a poignant story of love, loss, and finding strength in unexpected places.This event marks the second installment of the Summer Film Series at Jengo’s Playhouse, an eclectic mix of festival favorites and locally-shot features presented by Cucalorus.
